Burrville Cider Mill

The Burrville Cider Mill, located on the North Branch of Sandy Creek, was built in 1801, making it one of Jefferson County's oldest establishments. Burrville's original name was Burr's Mills and was settled because of the 30-foot waterfall that could be used to power mill equipment. Burr's Mills was actually settled before nearby Watertown because the power of the Black River that runs through Watertown was considered too immense to harness while the falls at Burr's Mills were easily controlled.

In 1902 the Mill was purchased by Capt. John Burr, whom the community is named after. Rumor has it that Capt. Burr was a pirate on Lake Ontario and would steal from supply ships then sell the goods back to the troops stationed in Sackets Harbor.

The Mill is said to be haunted by a few very friendly spirits, one of them is thought to be Capt. Burr himself. These ghosts have been seen, heard, smelled and have even reached out to touch some who work there ... perhaps guiding their hand in their work. The site has been written about in several books about North Country sightings and host hunters from Ithaca have done an investigation and have gathered video and audio evidence of spirits roaming the Mill.

Today the Mill is a favorite fall gathering spot, open in time for the Labor Day Weekend and staying open until just before Thanksgiving. We're open seven days a week from 9am-8pm. The Mill was converted to retail cider production in the 1940's by Homer Rebb. Ever since that time, "Burrville Cider" has been known as the best cider in the North Country. Come in and watch them press their cider and enjoy the sweet smell. All apples used to produce the cider are grown in New York State. Each fruit is hand inspected so that only the highest quality apples are used. You be the judge - with free samples offered!

While here you can buy the other in-house products including fresh apple cider donuts and a variety of homemade fudge. They carry many North Country favorites such as maple products, Croghan bologna, several cheeses including the highly popular cheese curd. Our retail shop is also stocked with handcrafted items and fresh produce like apples, pumpkins and squash.
