Welcome to Yellow Barn Winery, the only winery in Watertown New York. Watertown has one of the most challenging climates to grow wine grapes in the United States. Here we can have snow as late as May and frost in early September. Temperatures can dip to minus 40 degree Fahrenheit in mid-winter. Wine making is a fairly new concept here in the North Country but shows great promise for future growth as the region embraces its ability to produce cold hardy grape varieties.
The winery is on the Surdo family farm.In 2002 we started experimenting with cold hardy grapes.We were probably the only ones around happy when our temperature hit minus 40 to see if our grapes survived and produced well that year.We are pleased to report that that crop and all since then have produced wonderfully.These very grapes are what we use to produce the many varieties of wine on site.From reds to whites, sweet wines to dry, we have something for every taste.Goldie White, Frontenac, Eventide, Mill Creek Red and Deer Run are just a few of our most popular flavors.
