A tie stall barn is a more traditional style of barn that has individual stalls for each animal. Food and water are brought to the animal for consumption. Although the cows are each in their own stall, they have plenty of room to lay down and relax. Many times this type of barn uses a pipeline milking system where workers carry the milking equipment to each individual cow where it is attached into a pipeline and emptied into the bulk tank. Some tie stall barns use a milking parlor where the cows will walk to a room where they stand next to milking equipment and a farm worker attaches the milk cups to the cows teats and her milk is let down. Cows may be put outside during nice weather, however this isn’t always the case. Many dairy farms have large fans on their cows in the barn during the summer to reduce problems associated with heat. The optimum temperature for a cow is between 41 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. By being in a barn the cows are able to be cooled down in the humid North Country summer, and kept warm in the harsh winters.
