The mission of the Jefferson County Agricultural Development Committee is to assist in the retention, growth, and promotion of Jefferson County’s agricultural industry. The idea to create an agricultural development corporation began in 1998 when a group of producers, agribusiness, bankers, educators, economic developers, lawmakers, agricultural agencies and others were brought together to examine the agricultural industry. It was decide to establish a not – for – profit local development corporation for agriculture, with a Coordinator to head the effort. In 2000, Jay Matteson was hired as the Coordinator of the Jefferson County Agricultural Development Corporation. The Coordinator is administratively an employee of the Jefferson County Job Development Corporation and receives programmatic guidance from the Ag Development Committee. They have a very informative website, www.comefarmwithus.com that includes great information including a list of regional farmers markets.
The Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District was formed in 1956 under the principle of bringing people, government agencies, and private interests together to manage Jefferson County’s natural resources. They work closely with the US Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources Conservation Service to promote programs that protect the water quality, and conserve our natural resources. They have agricultural conservation programs for farmers, as well as sponsor educational events for the next generation. If you have any questions regarding soil, water quality, or agronomy, don’t hesitate to give them a call.
